Brighton 2 Bournemouth 0

The ‘jury’s out’ on new coach Graham Potter has gone to a thumbs-up.

True at this stage last season we were in a better position under Chris Hughton but the football is more attractive now and Potter has given youngsters like Aaron Connolly and Steven Alcate their chance.

However it was a Hughton signing who never looked like making it – Iranian Jaranbaksh from AZ Alkmaar – who opened his account with the Seagulls giving the early  lead.

VAR denied us a second when six foot seven Dan Burn, cool as you like, used one long leg to control the ball and another to hammer it home.

Offside  was only marginal and illustrates why VAR is so unpopular with fans.

You celebrate the goal, the dreaded VAR referral comes up and the goal is overruled in circumstances when neither offensive players nor defenders  appealed against the original decision and the object of offside was Burn’s elbow.

To make it worse it’s not “one size fits all”, as it is not used in the Championship and a clear cut penalty (according to Alan Tanner) was not given against Bristol City which might have given Fulham a crucial point.

A second goal by Aaron Mooy on loan from Huddersfield shored up the points.

I really hope that the only bit of business Brighton in the January window does is make the deal permanent as the Australian midfielder works extremely hard, has a good pass and scores.

With him and Davy Propper in midfield Brighton have an excellent “engine room’.
