Pay your TV licence … or else

Yesterday I received the renewal demand for my BBC licence costing £154.

Under “what else do you need to know” is: “The licence fee must be paid”.

I am from that class of person – white middle class, heterosexual – that the BBC no longer want but that does not stop them from asking for my money with powers that the utility services do not possess.

I was pleased that Culture Secretary Baroness Morgan has flagged up the issue by referring to the change in the  media landscape.  This issue was not mentioned in the demand. I am sure the new youthful generation the BCC craves are savvy enough to know how how to get the BBC without charge

I hope that when the charter comes up for renewal in 2027 the tv licence will be abolished altogether.

If you think about it, it’s an unbelievable situation: you have to pay a fee to an organisation that does not want you as a customer.

My radio station of choice is Radio 3.

I like classical music as background, the presenters are well-informed and not too intrusive, but it must have the sort of listeners the BBC don’t want.

What will they do?

Play Carl Maria von Weber all the time on the basis that with a name like that he must be transgender?

In fact BBC does an enormous amount to mentor, fund and inspire young musicians. Last week after an exceellent bio feature on Beethoven at midday these young musicians gave a concert and in interview stated how grateful they were for their BBC funding.

The good news is that Radio 3 audience figures are 16% up. The bad news is that New Zealand radio moved their classical station to medium wave with non stop unpresented music.
