Sports Personailty of the Year…ugh

If you are expecting an appreciation of Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY) stop reading now.

I had no intention of watching if and this is why.

1. The BBC has very few sports rights and almost every sequence will bear the logo of another broadcaster. Once the BBC could no longer showcase SPOTY as Sports Review of the Year they  have now repositioned it as a glitzy celebrity love-in that goes on for ever.

2. I can neither take Gary Lineker nor Clare Balding.  Gary Lineker was a great striker but in my opinion is an average presenter. I can cope with his high salary less than at BT Sport where he fronts up their Champions League big games.

Clare Balding I find smug. She has become less National Treasure, more Britain’s Head Girl.

3. There is no need to watch it, nor for that matter Andrew Marr as in these programmes the content is repeated ad nauseam on subsequent news bulletins.

I don’t begrudge Ben Stokes the title. He had a tremendous summer of cricket though dwarfed by six-time F1 winner Lewis Hamilton.
