The Tanner Report/ Luton 3 Fulham 3

This game was a product of the festive season with 3 giveaway goals, 2 from Fulham.

In the cycle of 8 key games we never conceded more than 2 so it’s entirely Fulhamish to concede 3 to a side struggling at the bottom.

Our defensive lapses are the most  important reason why we occupy a play off not an  automatic place.

There has however been healthy competition for midfield places. Stefan Johansen has been playing well but he was on the bench for Josh Onomah.

Onomah reminds me of Dickson Etuhu who played in midfield in Roy Hodgson’s team. He is a big physical unit, very strong and – when others are beginning to feel the fatigue late in the match – he is still working very hard.

I remember  in extra time in the Europa Final at Hamburg in 2010 the boys were out on their feet, playing for the penalty shoot-out but there was Dickson still taking the fight to Atletico Madrid.

The other results fell well for us.

Above us Leeds have only 2 points out of 9 whilst WBA  got a draw. I read the Fulham Independent web site, full of doom and gloom. The same old saddos posting pessimism whoever the manager.

The problem is that people – and indeed players – read this, hence the reaction of joy from his team mates for Onomah who had really copped it in social media after he scored the winner v Leeds.

In the old days you had players targeted by the fans – Johnny Haynes once remonstrated with the Enclosure for ripping into Jimmy Hill – but not social media that can destroy a player, especially a young one’s confidence.
