A great man remembered
Yesterday at a charity lunch the host on my table was Brook Land. Brook as at the same school as me and, in introducing him to an old friend from the same school who is a keen lover of the theatre, I mentioned that Brook’s father David Land was an eminent impresario of his or any day. So great was the respect for him that his memorable service in March 1996 at theTheatre Royal was attended by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice ( Land had signed them up and backed their first hit “Jesus Christ Superstar”) though their relationship had so broken down they were not on talking terms. Even in another place David Land was able to repair torn showbiz relationships. His company was called Hope and Glory and he delighted in answering the phone
“Land of hope and glory“
They don’t make them like him any more.
