Dinner For Dennis Turner

Last night I went to a dinner to celebrate the contribution of the late Dennis  Turner to Fulham FC.  Dennis was programme editor, club historian, author of definitive and polished books on Fulham and in 2009 appointed a director.  In January 2014 he dropped dead in his kitchen.

The evening was organised by the 1879 Club. I am not a member of this club, it is. harder to join than the Garrick as there is no waitng list.  You have to know a member , be invited to an event and hope you are  approved.  I was however chuffed when Steve .Norris in a polished  tribute saw fit  to mention me. It was at a lunch  when someone argued that. Jimmy  Langley was the club’s greatest penalty taker. He never  missed.  Dennis  corrected him : yes he did against Walsall ina cup repla . He was a great wit and speaker  .  He once said “There are three types of economists: those that can count and those that cannot .”

It was an evening  of old Fulham with tributes paid and readings from  Dennis  reports of legendary  Fulham matches recited.  Kit Symons was there and he must have been touched by the support for him in the room.  A Fulham man through and through he is doing  his utmost to restore the success of the Al Fayed era. The evening showed that we remember those who gave so much to us and the spirit that defines and permeates our club still burns brightly

About Alan Tanner

After a distinguished military service in the Catering Corps, Alan Tanner did well in mufti with his chamois as a window cleaner. Sadly he had to retire after falling from the fifth floor of Danny Murphy's mock Tudor home. He spends his retirement watching and writing about his beloved Fulham whom he has supported for over 50 years.
