Inevitably, the use of drugs in sport is neither confined to performance-enhancing substances nor humans.
Horse-racing has a long and notorious history of both doping and managing to fudge embarrassing scandals. I’ve heard it said, by those who know a lot more about the ‘sport of kings’ than me, that the only race meets offering guaranteed genuine competition from start to finish are those featuring the classics. For the bulk of the remainder, it’s a case of doping, betting coups, horses being deliberately held back in preparation for betting coups, and … er… you-name-it.
