Xmas Day Thoughts

There seems to be a disconnect to the way that Xmas is built up, particularly in the TV ads, and people’s actual enjoyment of the so-called festive period.

As a single person I guess there are those that feel sorry for me, deprived as I am of a family Xmas.

For me, its a time to read, listen to music and – above all – plan for the year to come.

It’s more about solitude than loneliness and long ago I declined invitations to attend other people’s Xmas lunches.

When I worked it was a useful time for a longer “get away” but  these became so expensive that I abandoned that to,

My p/a Polly dropped round last evening.

Amongst her other assets is her competence with appliances and general plumbing.

My efforts to bleed a radiator resulted in a flood of Noah-like proportions and she was swiftly able to sort it.

We exchanged Xmas experiences.

She has a temp job in London which she said was manic in the build-up to Xmas.

To avoid the Tube she had walked the length of Oxford St, an experience she would not like to repeat.

My late father would say the saddest surgery to hold was the one after Xmas when patients were depressed by a Xmas falling short on expectations.

Now we can add  to family strife, depressing global warfare, a cost of living crisis and dissatisfaction with our rulers.

Like many I will be pleased when it’s over
