10 most influential sporting figures

I have been participating in a list of the 10 most influential sporting figures.

The key words are influential and figure.

The subjects need not necessarily be sports people and must have changed their sport.

Thus I listed Bosman and Jimmy Hill, average footballers but game changers, ahead of Pele, Maradona, George Best and Messi.

I did include Johan Cruyff, a great player and manager at Barcelona created and inspired a whole new style.

Not surprisingly Muhammad Ali came out tops.

He both mastered and changed his sport. He was so inspiring for his community and beyond.

Michael Jordan was a popular choice.

In golf I chose Arnold Palmer, the father of the modern golfer expertly managed by Marc McCormack, in preference to Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods – though one contributor made an eloquent case for Seve Ballesteros who did so much for European golf.

In the end it’s bit of fun, an alternative to all those videos and photographs circulating, but stimulating nonetheless.
