The Cricket World Cup comes to life
Australia’s 3-wicket win at Kolkota was the most enthralling game so far in a rather tepid World Cup.
South Africa chose to bat as the advantage seems to pass to the team that does.
However they were soon 24-4 and Australia in pole position.
David Miller’s century brought some honour to their score which ended at 210, just 3 runs short of that memorable semi-final contested in Edgbaston in 1997.
Low scores often make for exciting limited overs cricket and it was certainly no formality as – still needing 20 runs – it was tailenders Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc who had to deliver.
I supported the Aussies as we probably would never have heard the end of another South African side in a World Cup Final.
They made some errors too: Captain Tembi Bavuma was not fit and left the field of play with no impact – and why was strike bowler Robada under used?
Australia will have had one less day of rest than their opponents in the final. India are the best team in the world so one wonders why they are afforded every advantage to win?
