Sunday tv sport
Normally of à Sunday morning I take a bracing walk by the sea but in the face of driving rain I watched the final of the Australian tennis open Instead. Those who know more about Grand slam tennis than me advise that the Australian Open is the best of the four. Wimbledon is too up itself and its takeover of Wimbledon Park has upset many local residents ;the French open at Roland Garros is on clay whilst the American public at Flushing Meadow can be boorish so aficionados enjoy The Rod Laver arena most of all.
Nowak Djorkovic had beaten Jarryk Sinner in an epic semi final of 5 sets. He was 16 years senior to Alcatraz but could he beat him? He won the first set but you could sense the strength draining out of him and the young Spaniard saw him of f3-1 to become the youngest to win 4 Grand Slams. Of the big three Roger Federer is the most graceful , Rafa Nadal the most competitive but somehow Djorkovic has been overlooked. He is indisputably one of the greats and still going strong
When I could see the way the match was going I switched from TBT ‘à coverage to radio 5. I admire Russell Fuller’s knowledge and there is no better commentator in any sport than the excellent Annabel Croft both supporters by Gigi Salmon and Pat Cash. It’s a much stronger team than TNT’s Tim Henman, Laure Robson and Jamie murray.
In the afternoon I watched Manchester United 3 Fulham 2. I texted Alan Tanner how unlucky I thought his Fulham team were unlucky ( they seemed to have a perfectly good goal chalked off) Alan responded that the story will be more about Man Utd’s resurgence than Fulham’s resilient performance. He was right but I enjoyed the match especially injury time with 2 goals scored. and Man Utd. holding on.
