The golfing weekend

Once again I was frustrated.

In the European Tour event the British Masters at Close House, Newcastle, my fancy Ashley Chesters was doing well until he came a cropper in the final round shooting a 74.

Italian Renato Parratore won here.

Over in the States I would have retrieved something on an each way tickle on Matt Wollf but he went and bogeyed the 18th after being 3rd for the previous 17 holes. Michael Thompson had a rare win here

Hey ho …

I enjoyed reading an article on Bryson deChambeau in The Sunday  Times by David Walsh.

Walsh is a fearless investigative reporter who exposed Lance Armstrong.

His article on deChambeau went further than my critique of his slow play and bad manners on course as Walsh argued that his long driving was not a thing of beauty.

I can recall in my younger days Dave Thomas driving 300 yards and being held in awe though he did not have the short game to prosper from his first shot.

Now guys regularly hit 350 yards plus and some more.

The odd thing is you might think that as a golfer approaches senior tour status he might lose length but as often as not it’s the putter that fails him.

This happened to Ernie Els and more recently Justin Rose.

If I feel frustrated, what about Tony Finau who once again failed to maximise his position?

Some golfers like Lee Westwood and Colin Montgomerie are weighed down by failing to win a Major despite topping the rankings but poor Finau has only won the one PGA event way back in 2016.

Not that his bank manager will complain. Aged 30 he has earned $19 million!
