Final day of the Masters
Dustin Johnson was a worthy wearer of the Green Jacket as he led from start to finish.
Conscious that he had spurned the lead after 54 holes on 4 occasions the phlegmatic world number one must have been worried when he could feel the breathe of Cameron Smith and Sunjae Im in the opening 9 yesterday but he played measured golf to see them off with a record-winning score.
I keep a list of potential winners and the Aussie Cameron Smith was on it after winning the Australian PGA a few years back.
He not only finished runner-up yesterday but in so doing also was the first golfer to complete 4 rounds at Augusta in the sixties.
Im plays every USPGA event but has no residence.
He stays at hotels.
At 23 the golfing world is before him.
It was a treat to see all 4 rounds which I mainly did on Sky Sports and I only have praise for its coverage.
Occasionally when I had a chore in the kitchen I listened to Radio 5’s coverage presented by Mark Chapman and was appalled.
Chapman seemed to think that his football banter style was appropriate and every time I heard him he was laughing loudly at something not very amusing.
The Masters deserves more respect.
I thought of the BBC presenters over the years – like Des Lyman or John Inverdale – who would have done a more professional job.
At least we were spared Chris Evans and Gary Lineker. Best of all why not let the knowledgeable Iain Carter host it?
I also missed an American.
In recent years Jay Townsend brought much course knowledge.
We only have to wait 6 months – COVID permitting- as the Masters returns to its traditional April slot next year.
