Brighton 3 Newcastle United 0
I received a text from Alan Tanner when the Brighton third goal was scored saying “if only”. When we spoke I told him Newcastle are playing poorly and they are only two points ahead of Fulham with the two meeting the last game of the season.
Brighton thoroughly deserved this win after first half performance which was as dull as anything under the Chris Hughton regime.
However Leandro Trossard scored with a superb long low shot from outside the box to give the Seagulls the lead in extra time of the half.
Danny Welbeck’s equally sublime long shot made it two nil and Neil Maupay added a third.
Brighton played Maupay and Welbeck wide which stretched the Newcastle back four.
I do not why Newcastle are so bad.
They had Andy Carroll and Dwight Gayle on the bench and experience on the pitch with Ciaran Clark and Jonjo Selvey but lacked spirit, impetus and momentum.
It should never have been such a easy win.
Brighton are now 6 points clear of Fulham with a game in hand and superior goal difference. Southampton and Burnley may yet still be dragged into the fight.
If I was a Toon fan I would be worried, very worried.
