A familiar tale
Last Saturday the Weekend Section of The Times featured an article titled I married a Conman – it cost me £150,000 and my self dignity”.
I would provide the link but as a matter of policy we do not to those newspapers and journals which demand a subscription. Besides it’s a lengthy feature.
The salient points are that the unnamed woman I will call Mrs X met Chris at a dinner party.
He is a charmer and charmed her to marry for the second time.
Mrs X has a successful career in company reconstruction.
She says she is the “go to” person for FTSE 100 companies.
They enjoyed the high life of restaurants but it was she who was always paying. Chris suggested they opened a market garden business in Cornwall.
She remortgaged her house to pay for this. The business failed. She discovered when she was contacted by the woman that his real motive was to see her in Cornwall.
He took £10,000 from her and larger sums from his other lovers.
Mrs X, though admitting her attraction, said enough already and began divorce proceedings..
Three years ago when in Munich I met a German woman Gretchen with whom I maintained contact albeit intermittently as there were long and inexplicable periods of silence.
The excuse for one was that she got involved with a professional man who was a “wrong un” who finished up in prison.
She is still scarred by this relationship. He appeared to have used her address and she had debt collectors turning up at unearthly hours.
I thought the story might be of interest to her and she asked me to photograph it for transmission.
This involved reading it for the second time and in so doing inconsistencies appeared
If Mrs X is so good at company reconstruction, which must involve a strong grip of finance and assessment of key personnel, why was she duped so easily? Could she possibly have enjoyed the ride and chose to ignore the obvious?
