A Golden Streak

On  Friday I backed Anthony Knockaert to be Brighton’s first goal scorer in Brighton v Nottingham Forrest, I would have had 6 successful soccer tickles on Saturday had I betted as intended against Middlesbrough  v Stoke. I was  back on track with the winner Ryan Moore in the John Deere. Classic in a weakened field  as many top golfers were in Rio. Streaks like this normally occur when you least expect it and indeed need it. Of course you think how much you would have won had you placed more not how much you would have lost.

In golf Justin Rose one of sport’s  nice guys took the gold in golf beating the in form Henriik Stensen. I have already said that the Olymoics should be the pinnacle of the sport which in golf the four majors are, will and should be. The Russian institutional cheating , the athletes dropping out become of the Zika virus, the cost, the impeachment of the Brazilian President all generated a feeling in me  of dispassion  over the Olympics but I’m fully paid up now watching the games night after night and when I awake in the early hours making myself a cup of tea to watch a final. I’ve yet to have a bet as I’m ignorant of most disciplines. I have been disappointed  by the coverage , too many inarticulate former athletes and not enough fluent experienced sports broadcasters. A pleasing exception is Mike Costello who amongst all the shrill hyperbole stays calm, well informed and finds a telling  fact. Much of the enjoyment lies in the success of the UK team that garnered another 4 golds. I’m old enough to recall the Olympiads like Tokyo in 1964 when the UK won four in total. Thanks to lottery funding we have become an  Olympic heavyweight .  With Boston and Oslo pulling out of bidding of the games we need successfu Olympiads or else I fear the games will be given to a country not to a  city which detracts from  their  fellowship, tradition and appeal

Now we’re counting off the days to the Ryder Cup. Tyrell Hatton has made a late claim but captain Darren Clarke will be concerned by the number of rookies in  the European  side.  That is the great thing about sport  namely you have never have long to wait for the next event … or wager.
