A good lunch
The late Keith Waterhouse wrote a book about lunch.
He would write all morning and then enjoy a long and boozy lunch.
Such lunches have passed out of fashion.
These days I favour a light lunch at home with a fruity San Pellegrino and a M& S fruit jelly.
Yesterday however an old friend of mine whom I have known for some 48 years came down to discuss a matter with me and I gave him lunch at English’s afterwards. English’s – as ever- did us proud. On Fridays they offer lobster at an acceptable price with a glass of fizz .
We had all the constituents of a great lunch; food, wine, venue and above all good conversation.
We spoke of life, films, even a philosophical discourse on what is truth.
In fact the one thing we did not discuss was Coronavirus.
Unused to three courses, fizz and burgundy – after dropping my friend off at the station – I repaired to base camp to have an extensive nap.
