A la Colthard/The Black Horse, Binsted
A taxi driver and a Rust colleague who lives locally had both recommended The Black Horse at Binsted near Arundel and after going there yesterday for lunch I can see why.
It’s a country pub which has built onto it a dining room/conservatory with fine views over the South Downs.
I ordered a crayfish and avocado cocktail.
I had envisaged a plate of diced avocado and crayfish but it was a delicious shredded blend of the two in a Marie Rose sauce served in a large glass.
To follow I had rump of local lamb in a port jus: 3 generous tasty slices of lamb with potatoes dauphinois and a plate of fresh veg.
There was still room for an apple and blackberry crumble which I shared with my guest.
My guest ordered a green salad and a steak and Guinness pie, praising both.
The bill for 2 with half a pint of local ale and a glass of Malbec was a more than reasonable £74.
I have paid double that for considerably worse.
My only criticism was the slow, though friendly, service.
It took ages to deliver the desert menu and even longer to serve our choice.
My guest was beginning to fret as he had scheduled an early afternoon business call.
That part of Sussex near the river Arun is well served by gastro pub s – The Bridge at Amberley, The George at Brougham and the Squire and Horse at Bury are particular favourites and the Black Horse is worthy addition.
All have the advantage of the scenery of South Downs and excellent value.
