A La Colthard/the Royal Crescent Bath
It was Nancy’s idea that “Rusters On European Tour” might make a trip to Bath.
Alice (Mansfield) wanted to see the Canaletto exhibition at the Holburne museum Bath and I don’t need much excuse to revisit one of my favourite hotels The Royal Crescent.
As the name would suggest the hotel is situated unobtrusively in the Royal Crescent overlooking Royal Victoria Park and within walking distance of the Roman baths and Pump Room of genteel Bath.
I went on a evening dusk stroll and, looking at estate agents windows, properties went for up to £2.5m. I was struck how peaceful Bath is.
No-one talking loudly into mobiles. There was a feeling of calm.
After a whisky sour or two in the garden of the hotel I ordered my dinner.
I fancied a steak. The waiter informed me that the French chef would only prepare this medium rare. This type of arrogance annoys me.
The French medium rare is all but raw and besides is not the manner of cooking up to the diner?
On the adjacent table was an elderly little Polish gentleman with his companion. He found the steak indigestible and it went back.
I got through mine fortified by a full glass of powerful Medoc.
The first course of a salad of heritage tomatoes with a chilled tomato consommé beside it was delicious, as was the lime brûlée with mango and passion fruit.
The bill came to just under £100 including the cocktails and. 2 glasses of wine.
Husband Ollie had treated me to a suite.
It was lovely to be in a comfortable spacious space with no boutique pretentious interior decor and design but traditional furniture.
