Just in

Adieu Thailand

On Sunday I left the resort and tomorrow am off to Singapore. Though I have had an enjoyable time I will not be sorry to leave the resort. The accommodation is fine but the resort is isolated with only a hourly ferry to the main (is)land of Phuket. There is nothing in the island but the resort which just has an understocked mini market. Thus you cannot buy foods and are obliged to order it from the restaurants. There are in fact two restaurants with a shared kitchen. In the evening one serves Italian, the other a buffet which has a fusion theme of cuisines you would never associate, yesterday Chinese and American.

I like to get to the restaurant early and people watch or day dream. The couples surrounding me have their mobile ever present. Though the cuisine is indifferent I am impressed by the staff. Hazel appears to be the restaurant manager. She is a bundle of energy – last night she was moving heavy speakers setting up set for the two musicians, waitressing around the bar and greeting at the desk. She must work a 12 hour day on 3 shifts but she is perpetually cheerful and smiles away. There is no doubt she could manage a chain restaurant in the UK superbly. Another feature I like is a tabby cat on the scrounge. There are many families with young children chiefly Russians whose kiddies love the cat. I have nothing against Russians (although I could not eat a whole one) but they are all obese with broad faces and wider hips and tummies and attack the buffet with greedy gusto.

I’m often asked the question why I never married. I usually give the untruthful answer that I never met the right person. The reality is that I could not bear to lose such moments of privacy and solitude for reflection. Most of my close friends understand this, even share this feeling, whilst other speculate that I must be lonely.

roodynAs I have an early  flight Tuesday I decided rather than leave the island on a 4.00am boat because its still night time and I do not trust the resort to get it right.

Of all the Phuket resorts I visited I liked Kata beach the best and booked a room at the Boathouse where I had eaten an early supper with Polly and Grania overlooking the beach. There is an elegant super cool Japanese couple on the adjoining  table both staring intently into their mobiles whilst making no conversation. All the while the beach is emptying and a delicious sunset is setting over it.
