Amadeus and the Night Manager
The above programmes were the BBC’s Xmas offering and I was underwhelmed by both. Although centuries separated Mozart and the Night Manager the two dramas reflected the BBC’s emphasis on diversity.
In Amadeus, Mozart’s librettist Carlo Ponte was played by à black actor. that was not the only problem of credibility. Will Sharpe played Mozart as a foul mouthed drunk. Maybe he was , maybe he wasn’t but one thing is certain namely Mozart with his genius mastered every genre of classical music. : choral , opera , symphony requiem mass and quartets yet this portrayal was utterly unconvincing.
The Night Manager was the sequel to the John le Carré novel with Hugh Laurie’s evil arm dealer making a reincarnation as did Tom Hidkeston as Alex formerly Jonathan Pyne. as with most modern espionage dramas there was much use of mobile phones and computers but the drama did not engage
ive given up on Amadeus but I might watch the second episode of the Night Manager.
