An invitation to a virtual lunch

“The Virus, self-isolation and virtual” are the contemporary buzzwords.

I received an invitation for a”virtual cricket lunch” on Zoom. Time, dress even matters to be discussed were specified.

I did not accept this invitation but I did have a good story for it which I will share with our readers.

It relates to the obdurate batsman of the late 20th century Chris Tavare who could occupy the crease for ages.

When the Mary Rose was exhumed from the sea, a sailor emerged from the wreckage who had been there for 400 years. His initial remark was

Is Chris Tavare off the mark yet?

I heard a similar type of story about a Japanese soldier emerging from the jungle some 30 years after the end of hostilities.

After enquiring about Emperor Hirohito and the determination of the war he asked:

And Billy Bonds.  Does he still play for West Ham?

About Douglas Heath

Douglas Heath began his lifelong love affair with cricket as an 8 year-old schoolboy playing OWZAT? Whilst listening to a 160s Ashes series on the radio. He later became half-decent at doing John Arlott impressions and is a member of Middlesex County Cricket Club. He holds no truck at all with the T20 version on the game. More Posts
