And now … the end is near …
Trawling around the British newspaper websites in the wee hours – as is my wont – just occasionally one comes across examples of reports, opinion pieces or even journalistic excellence that impress – or indeed, alternatively, cover ground or express opinions with which you may not always agree – albeit, by the same token, sometimes do.
Given the current state of things in the United Kingdom – and indeed around the world when it comes to things like Climate Change, becoming carbon neutral by 2050 (is that the latest deadline that the world’s politicians have agreed?) and/or the travails that humanity faces in coming to terms with gross over-population of the planet – and so on, ad infinitum – it is quite easy to take up a position (as I have) of being a world-weary, resigned, “We’re all doomed, Mr Mainwaring! … Doomed!” [(c) Private Fraser from Dad’s Army], “Let’s face it, the world’s going to hell in a handcart so what’s the point of getting particularly exercised about anything?” cynic.
In which context I have to confess that I really rather enjoyed this piece penned by former BBC legend and Mastermind quizmaster John Humphrys this morning that I spotted this morning upon the website of the – DAILY MAIL
