Bayern 1 PSG 0

You can pretty much know in advance that when the pundits talk in advance of a goal fest in a Champions League final it will be a cagey affaire.

And so it proved.

Only one goal divided the teams.

In a game of few opportunities Bayern’s keeper Manuel Neuer – mainly with his right leg – defied anything PSG could offer.

Coaches and managers set their team out not to lose rather than to win.

Thomas Tuchel the PSG coach was brutally aware that failure to deliver this title could end his reign at PSG.

Hansi Flick at Bayern, appointed initially in a caretaker role, had turned round the fortunes of the Munich outfit.

His job and reputation are now secure.

Naymar once again failed to deliver. He has the talent of the world’s best but not their mentality.

Bayern worked out  how to neutralise Mbappe.

PSG’s best player was Marquinhos.

With Gary Lineker back at the helm as presenter and the excellent Rio Ferdinand, BT Sport’s coverage improved.

Darren Fletcher commentated with Steve MacManaman beside him.

McManaman does fulfil one of the requirements of his job, at which Trevor Brooking was adept, namely pointing out what happened when the main commentator erred or was confused.

Both however got their Thiagos confused.

It’s the French one Silva, not Bayern’s, that is going to Chelsea.

We had to suffer that dreadful rap which did not improve the second time round and Ferdinand somewhat insensitively sneered at Lineker’s age but the whole coverage was more professional than at their Europa League final .

The studio still had to deal with that unfortunate occurrence when a game does not live up to its build up.

Lineker at half time glossed over a dull first half with a plea for second half goals.

It takes an Alan Green to rejoice in the game’s direness in his grim Ulster tones.
