Brighton 1 Manchester City 4
Before this match I jotted down the City midfield :
Phil Foden
Kevin De Bruyne
Mahrez
Gundoyan
Fernandinho
Silva
Jack Grealish
I must have left someone out. It was Rodri.
So when I heard we had guests and my wife suggested a later start for dinner so I might go to the Amex I replied that I would watch the match on TV as I could nee no other results than a massacre of Brighton.
I predicted 4-0.
When you have such depth as City possess you do not need an out-and-out striker and there is real competition in places.
Graeme Souness regularly criticises the Grealish acquisition for not fitting into the City fast tempo style.
In my view, he offers a different option as the finest English dribbler since Paul Gascoigne. He played yesterday and was involved in a running feud with Joel Veltman. Brighton were three down in the first half but played more competitively in the second which was – as it were – 1-1.
I had made the right call.
Brighton are fourth but the 5 teams below them are within 3 points. We have only scored once – and that was from the penalty spot – in the last 3 games.
We need to get Adam Webster and Yves Bissouma back as soon as possible and start Qadir Lamptey, whose liveliness and pace were the spark for the second half improved performance.
