Buying a pup

Yesterday I was called by the trainer of my greyhound to say that after a couple of months of treatment and rest for a tendon injury he was now irretrievably lame. He would never run again. For sometime I thought I had in every sense bought a pup. I never thought that I had acquired a dog that would win the Greyhound Derby but one that would be of interest to my Godson to visit in kennels and follow in races and there would be fun evenings at Hove dog stadium. Both missions were accomplished. Against this paying out monthly kennel and vet fees with no incoming appearance money makes it all a wasteful exercise.

When I researched and took advice on greyhounds I appreciated that after care for a retired greyhound was a feature indeed a duty of the sport. Rest homes exist and the greyhound makes an affectionate pet. I do not think my beloved cat would take kindly to sharing his space with a dog so this was non starter for me.

After consultation with my Godson and his mother I will make an informed decision as to whether the greyhound industry and me should both go our separate ways or whether to buy a younger puppy and see how he develops.

My dog’s finest moment was at a Sunday open race at Hove. This is like a championship play off  decider ,a qualifier for the highest level. He ran his little legs off and was just  beaten in a crowded finish . As he stretches out on some hearth in rural Sussex I hope he will relive it too.
