Dinner for One
Many years ago I was asked to advise on a copyright issue by the widow of the comedian Freddie Frinton.
Her late husband had the rights passed to her of a sketch he put on in music hall in Blackpool called Dinner for One.
The film of this is played every year on German TV and other countries and is so inculcated into their New Year festivities that many Germans won’t go out till they have seen it.
I had never heard of it but then again not many Britons have.
A woman is celebrating her ninetieth birthday to which places are laid at her dining table for her friends, Sir Toby, Admiral von Schneider, Mr Winterbottom and Mr Pommeroy – all of whom cannot be there as they have long passed away.
Her butler, played by Freddie Frinton, has to impersonate each guest and becomes intoxicated in the toasts to them.
