They could not come back. This England team has determination and, even though they may say that a goal line clearance deprived them of a draw, Spain had many more goal opportunities in the second half.

Analyst Chris Sutton admitted that it was a better result for football.

Traditionally viewers watch the BBC coverage to avoid the adverts but I was satisfied by Sam Matterface on ITV, supported by Led Dixon and Ally McCoist.

I can’t remember too many gaffes and the commentary was impartial.

As for Gareth Southgate he brought a young group together and looking back there were no significant errors in selection nor tactics.  Spain were simply better. Perhaps he will now take an offer of managing one of the big boys. and you can hardly blame him.
