Fiorentina file: Hearts 0 Fiorentina 3
Last night I watched on TV with my father Fiorentina beat Hearts 3-0 at Tynecastle in the Europa Conference Tournament.
The guys on the Rust sport desk told me there are already too many tournaments across sport and this one, a junior branch of the junior Europa League, seems another.
Hearts looked a poor team and the Viola won comfortably without testing themselves.
I cannot recall Hearts having a worthwhile attempt on goal.
Mio babbo (my Dad) recalled Fiorentina and Italy’s first European trophy when we won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1961.
My Dad went to the first leg at Ibrox Park which we won 2-0.
We won the second leg 2-1 at the Stadio Comunale to win the trophy.
It was a great Fiorentina side with the magnificent Kurt Harmin, the little bird, on the wing.
In 1969 we lost in the quarter final 3-0 to Celtic (3-1 on aggregate ) who went onto to lose the final to Feyernoord.
Despite the victory Fiorentina are not in a good place.
Media mogul and President Rocco Commmusso, who comes from Calabria, was never popular and less so after the sale of Federico Chiesa and Vlahavic to Juventus.
I asked babbo who of the present side would get into the great Fiorentina teams we have seen in European competition and we could only think of full back Cristian Biraghi.
