Frank Worthington
It’s ironic that the passing of Frank Worthington coincided with the conscription of his beloved Elvis Presley.
Worthington once delayed the start of his season because he visited the home of Elvis in Memphis.
Frank Worthington was a great character and entertainer and played in that excellent Leicester side of the mid-Seventies including Len Glover, Keith Weller, David Nish, Alan Birchenall and Peter Shilton.
They looked so glamorous in those royal blue jerseys with white collars.
However the obits go on to say that he was a victim of his personality and Alf Ramsay and Don Revie would not therefore risk him.
This does not stack up.
His tally of 1 goal in 4 matches is way short of a top striker’s who would score at least 1 in 2.
Then you have to look at the international forward competition in the 1970s.
I sat down yesterday and listed these:-
Kevin Keegan
Francis Lee
Allan Clarke
Malcolm MacDonald
Martin Chivers
Geoff Hurst
Trevor Francis
Mick Channon
Kevin Hector
Ray Kennedy
Bob Latchford
Stan Bowles
Rodney Marsh
Peter Osgood
Duncan Mackenzie.
(Only the last 4 would be termed mavericks).
