Harlequins assessed

On Sunday, whilst most of us were glued to the TV to see the Ryder Cup unfurl, Harlequins were beating their North London rivals Saracens 36-29 in the Premiership Rugby Cup.

It was a pleasing victory but one must bear in mind the absentees on World Cup duty.

There were some grounds for optimism for Quins. With Joe Marchant off to Stade Français, Luke Northmore looks a capable replacement.

Nick David is a fine attacking full back with Tyrone Green now recovered from injury competing for his place.

Best of all, Joe Launchbury is a powerhouse in the second row – an area of weakness – and the return of Jack Walker and Joe Marler in the front row will make for a strong pack.

Off the pitch, Quins do not seem to have the financial problems of London Irish, Wasps and Worcester Warriors.

We have a waiting list for season tickets, sell out at the Stoop and always have strong connections in the City.

We also have a thriving Academy.

Even with the return of Danny Care, Marcus Smith, Joe Marler , Jack Walker, Tommaso Allan and André Esterhuizen I cannot foresee a repeat of the 2021 Championship, but I can’t see relegation either.
