Memories are not made of this
A frequent concern of Rusters and many seniors is forgetfulness.
Is this just a senior moment or the first signs of dementia?
On Christmas Eve I wanted to see Cast a Giant Shadow the stirring story of Micky Marcus (Kirk Douglas) who had decorated war service for the US Army afte the Normandy landings and, rather then continue his successful legal practice in New York, took up the request of David Ben Gurion to coordinate the disparate Israeli forces for the inevitable 1948 War in which they were heavily outnumbered and lacked materiel.
Despite being in breach of the law prohibiting a US soldier to fight for another army Micky Marcus was buried after his untimely death in the 1948 War of Independence in West Point cemetery in a ceremony attended by President Truman.
However of my DVD there was no sign and I had to rent it.
For those interested here is the review of the movie that I posted some time ago – CAST A GIANT SHADOW
Xmas movies featured a number of classics not all of them reviewed by J. S. Bird.
I intended to watch the appropriately-
titled for this year’s Xmas The Longest Day (1962) for a few minutes but it justified the description of a classic as I was soon immersed in it.
Darryl Zanuck all but bankrupted the studios with outdoor locations and his assemblage of talent (Henry Fonda, Robert Mitchum, Curt Jurgens, John Wayne, Richard Burton to name but five).
It’s the first war film to portray the German military standpoint and superior to Saving Private Ryan.
