More England rugby woes

England have now suffered four consecutive defeats.

Most of my rugby pals shared my pessimism in the build-up and were critical of Eddie Jones.

On Saturday, England failed to beat a 14 man team – not of the highest rank – who lost their fly half to injury in the warm up.

The Farrell/Smith combo failed to ignite and England were always second best.

The wily Jones said he was not going to criticise the referee and then promptly did so and was ‘disappointed’ by the performance.

So were we.

As national defeat in rugby does not carry the same hubris as in football the RFU are probably hoping to ride this out and part company with Jones after a no doubt unsuccessful World Cup.

A much better game was the earlier New Zealand v Ireland one.

The All Blacks got out of their blocks slowly but, once in the groove, their superiority was clear for all to see particularly their pace, exemplified by Ardie Savea evading 3 tackles and sprinting to the line to score.

He weighs 17 stone.

About Sandra McDonnell

As an Englishwoman married to a Scot, Sandra experiences some tension at home during Six Nations tournaments. Her enthusiasm for rugby was acquired through early visits to Fylde club matches with her father and her proud boast is that she has missed only two England home games at Twickenham since 1995. Sandra has three grown-up children, none of whom follow rugby. More Posts
