My golfing weekend

The new DP tour is in its South African swing.

Because of the Omicron variant many non-South Africans took flight and next week’s event at Leopard Creek is cancelled.

There was no coverage of the South Africa Nedbank Open until the final day yesterday and no reference to it on the BBC sport website.

It was won by Daniel Van Tonden and Hennie du Plessis – whom I backed each way – finished third.

Over in the States the final day of the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas produced great drama.

Collin Morikawa went into the final day leading the field by four strokes.

However he had a terrible day and Viktor Hovland – whom I backed at 10/1 – hit two eagles to march into the lead.

On the 17th, Patrick Reed drove into sand bordering the fairway. His stance was affected by a water irrigation unit in the ground.

It took the Texan a good ten minutes to decide whether to hit the ball or take a drop. Viktor Novland could only look on.

This delay is tedious for the viewer and surely Novland should have been allowed to play.  It clearly affected him as his approach shot to the green was wayward and he three-putted.

Fortunately for him, and me, his two-shot lead was sufficient for him to win.
