My sporting weekend

There is always someone worse off and in a relatively unproductive betting weekend that person was Austrian golfer Bernd Wiesberger.

He was one stroke ahead in the European Masters at Crans Switzerland when he hit the water on the 18th and 20 years old Dane Rasmus Hojgaard in the clubhouse at -13 won his third European victory.

Not only was the Austrian slugger deprived of the victor’s winnings but of an automatic Ryder Cup spot.

There is still two more qualifying events, The Italian Open his week and the BMW at Wentworth starting on September 12, but Wiesberger is unlikely to be an automatic pick for captain Pod Harrington with the likes of Bob Macintyre, Ian Poulter, Justin Rose, Sergio Garcia, Shane Lowry and Francisco Molinari contending for the three captain’s picks.

Over in the USPGA Patrick Cantlay beat Bryson DeChambeau in a play-off.

I swerved the event.

My only golfing result was Italian Guilio Migliozzi just making 7th for my each way tickle in Crans.

I did back the Liverpool v Chelsea draw.

I believe Chelsea will win the Premiership and though I did not lump on at 5-1 pre-season they offered the best value.

Thomas Tuchel has the beating of Pep Guardian and his game management when Chelsea went down to 10 men was superb.

Manchester United have surely upset their chances with the expensive import of 37 year old Cristian Ronaldo.

My mind goes back to the late sixties when neighbours City acquired Rodney Marsh from QPR when they were leading the old division one but then failed to win it.

The transfer seemed to be masterminded by Sir Alex Ferguson and Rio Ferdinand and if so undermines the authority of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

I wonder how Bruno Fernandes feels about it too. It smacks of putting one over Manchester City but not actually improving United’s title chances.
