My sporting weekend.
The two hot favourites to win the Farmers at Torrey Pines San Diego and the DP event in Dubai – Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy – were off the pace and Luke List and Victor Novland emerged as winners.
Jon Rahm had two poor final rounds. He now has a Major but doubts still remain about his temperament.
I had backed him to win but fortunately Justin Rose (backed each way) finished sixth to earn me some moolah.
I had backed Tyrell Hatton at Dubai.
He is another with bags of talent but a suspect temperament.
The smart money is on Rory McIlroy dominating the headlines.
The fact remains that the Irishman last won a Major in 2014 and – in the last 42 events – has only won two of them.
Norwegian Victor Novland had won more in the last five.
He came from nowhere to make a play-off with Richard Bland, at 48 double Novland’s age.
Novland – like Collin Okinawa – came from the College circuit and his first Major cannot be long away.
I had an unlikely win in the NFL play-offs, backing Cincinnati Bengals against Kansas Chiefs.
I know little about American football but in a two horse race the odds of 27/10 attracted me.
The Bengals fell behind, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mohames having a stormer. I went to sleep. When I woke up I discovered the Bengals had won and will now play the LA Rams, the team of Arsenal owner Stan Kronke, in the Super Bowl.
The NFL has its followers but any game that takes 4 hours to play out for 1 hour’s actual length does not float my boat.
