Rom coms
Rom coms are generally regarded as the frothy, superficial side of the film world. Yet they demand an actor who can play two genres: Romance and comedy.
Cary Grant is probably the best at it. The Sky film team – Dr Bonnie Greer, Stephen Armstrong, Ian Nathan and Neil Norman – duly assembled to pick their top 25. I found it a surprising choice. Ernst Lubitsch ‘It happened One Night’ starring Clark Gable (1944) came out first, ‘Casablanca’ second, but no places for ‘Singin in the Rain’ ‘Dirty Dancing’ Cyrano de Bergeres, nor ‘Lost in Translation’
These choices are necessarily subjective but surprising all the same. Maybe the programme was made with Valentine’s Day in mind.
The programme was followed by a documentary on Hugh Grant who morphed from floppy haired Hugh in rom-coms to darker roles and was particularly convincing as Jeremy Thorpe and In ‘Paddington 2’.
