Rory wins again

Rory won the Bridgestone Invitational by 2 shots. Has this event witnessed the handing over of the baton from Tiger Woods to Rory? I think not. The issue of when a sportsman is past it is an interesting one but in golf hard to chart. Three years ago Ernie Els won the Open and before that Tom Watson might have done. Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player had a wide spread of age in winning their majors. Tiger if he can sort out his back and head might yet come back. There is no doubt that Rory is back to his best. However there is chasing pack who finished in the top 15: Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose, Adam Scott, Ricky Fowler , Jim Furyk ( himself aged 46) ready to pounce.

The Ryder Cup has taken another twist. The decision of Dustin Johnson to withdraw after dark rumours over his personal life will help Europe but Tom Watson now has justification not to pick Tiger. This might allow Pat Reed in with Phil Micklelson and make the team look stronger.

The final major of the year, the PGA , begins at Valhalla this Thurssday. Rory will be a short price but I have snealing fancy for Adam Scott or Justin Rose both of whom I backed for Bridgestone.
