Ryder Cup Review
I have placed my bets – a USA win: a victory of 15 1/2 to 12 1/2 or 15-13; and Patrick Cantlay as top rookie.
The two captains have made their opening foursome picks.
British golf clubs are totally familiar with the two-ball foursome – some even insist on it – the Americans less so.
It’s a difficult format – for example, Rory MacIlroy and Shane Lowry use different golf balls.
There’s much pressure on say the follow-up play to a long drive.
The American picks were predictable.
I was only surprised that Tony Finau, who partnered Brooks Koepka so successfully last time round in Paris, was not selected in favour of Daniel Berger.
For the Europeans, I would have chosen Shane Lowry – who is formidable in windy conditions – but each pairing, with the possible exception of Lee Westwood and Matt Fitzpatrick, look strong enough to win.
