Sussex on top

Sussex now sit atop Division One – after predicting being at the other end of the table – having played Warwickshire, Somerset and three time champions Surrey, achieving 2 draws and a win.

A flat docile pitch was prepared at Hove which offered nothing to seam or spin. However, the Surrey batting line up – which numbered 5 recent internationals – could feast upon it. Dan Lawrence, Don Siblrey and Ollie Pope all scored centuries and Ben Foakes added 60.

Both sides were happy to agree a draw after bad light halted play at 3.25 pm – gone are the days when captains would cut a deal to make the final day a run chase.

The loser in this is the spectator. Few braved a bitter day at Hove to watch a draw being played out.

The only cricket worth watching was Ollie Pope’s stroke play as he returned to form. Still, the players, coach and board at Sussex can only be pleased with their start.
