Sussex role in T20 win

Like many a contributor on the Rust, I am a traditionalist and when it comes to cricket I much prefer the red ball game. However it is not every day – indeed not any day- that two Sussex bowlers have opened for their country so I watched Tyman Mills and Chris Jordan yesterday do so. There is irony here. Tyman Mills has a back problem so chronic that he cannot bowl in 50 over games let alone county fixtures. He cannot bowl a second spell. Chris Jordan reminds me of another Chris, Chris Lewis. He is capable bowler particularly useful at the death, can contribute a useful knock and is a superb fielder. He does not have enough talent with bat or ball to be a test player but he is more than useful in the white ball game. Both players took one wicket each and stopped India with Kohli at the helm getting off to a flier.

John Pargiter called and said he was putting a tenner on Sam Billings to be top scorer. Billings plays T20 cricket around the world, is big hitter and set England off at a lick of a run rate with Jason Roy. However wickets fall cheaply in T20 and it was captain Morgan that carried England comfortably over the line.

A quick word on our football team who ground out a 1-0 win over a dour Cardiff side last Tuesday. Our next game is at Huddersfield next Thursday and if we can beat them I really believe we can start to celebrate promotion. To miss out would require a total collapse and the spirit in the side reflected by a 2-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday, when for the last 30 minutes we had 10 men on the pitch, makes this highly unlikely. With Kayal and Rosenior to return we can carry injuries and suspensions. Connor Godston has fitted in well at right back for the injured Bruno and Pecagnoli the left for Bong. It was bitterly cold night last Tuesday for the Cardiff  game and I was still bearing a heavy cold so I wimped out to follow the game on Radio 5.

Finally a word of congratulation for Brightonian Jo Konta our last survivor in the Australian Open. Brighton is as popular with sportsmen as actors – prop Joe Marler lives down here – and on the sea front there is statue for Steve Ovett.
