Sussex Sharks don’t make it
Notwithstanding a comprehensive victory over Essex Eagles, we failed to qualify in the southern section of the T20 as Somerset, equal on points after a bigger win over Hampshire, had the better run rate by 0.063 of a run. Inevitably “if only” comes into play. We only needed 5 runs with 4 wickets in hand to beat Middlesex 3 games ago but no doubt if Somerset had missed out their supporters could refer to a dodgy decision, a rain affected result or a missed opportunity. Apparently our skipper Ross Taylor made it clear he would leave on the birth of his child but nonetheless these T20s players receive a handsome reward and you might have thought he would have stayed for the final curtain.
I had an engagement in the early evening out of which I could not get but instead of heading to Hove for the denouement I elected for the telly. This meant that I could inform my fellow supporters that Somerset had pipped us when no one in the ground seemed to be aware. Had this been the last day of the Premiership the table would have be continually updated but SKY had to wait for the delayed result of Middlesx v Glamorgan before they could really establish the position.
