Sussex win & top League Two

After two draws and yesterday’s win by four wickets against Gloucestershire, Sussex now top the second division.

After coach Paul Farbrace went on record saying that we will never witness again the golden period of the noughties when Sussex won 3 Championship titles and the Cheltenham & Gloucester (now the One Day) Cup, it looks like Sussex might just reclaim their position at the top table.

Only the weather – as rain was everywhere except Hove – could have prevented a Sussex victory.

Chairman Jon Filby must have had a sigh of relief in downing in celebration his favourite tipple of Harvey’s Ale as – if the umpires had ordered play to stop because of bad light – he would have encountered a barrage of brickbats for his refusal to switch them on in order to save on wattage bills.

With the steady Pujara at the crease Sussex always looked likely – weather permitting – to reach 144 but, my, they made heavy weather of it.

That cuckoo of the cricketing summer – the primrose Wisden Almanac – arrived on my door step, published rather late this year.

It’s more ‘right on’, but it’s all there: every tour; every domestic county T20 game and one day game; every Test record – all leavened by some interesting articles and photos.
