The 2019 Masters
The victory of Tiger Woods would not have pleased the bookies. The blanket media coverage of him and Rory McIlroy generates a lot of popular betting which belies their recent Majors form.
Woods though has had a good start to the year. I was on Francesco Molinari. I believe the occasion got to him.
He was tourney leader after 3 rounds but his impeccable tee to green accuracy deserted him on the 11th (Rae’s Creek) when he found the water and double-bogeyed. He did this again and slipped down the leaderboard.
There were several contenders – Brooks Koepka, Xavier Schauffele , Dustin Johnson and Patrick Cantlay – but Tiger had the experience and the authority.
He will be labelled The Comeback King because of his chronic back condition and personal travails but the reality is that it was Molinari’s to lose, which he did.
As ever the course looked magnificent and we know the holes so well.
It’s a true test of golf which only the best master.
Hence its name.
