The Ashes
I really enjoy following the Ashes during these wintry nights snug under my duvet.
Being a poor sleeper, waking regularly through the night, it’s a boon and I keep the radio on beside me.
Early on Wednesday morning I tuned to the inevitable batting collapse. England were 62-5 with Joe Root, Ben Stokes – and most of the middle order – back in the pavilion.
Once again the Gabba was the Gabattoir.
I hope it does not emulate the Test when Steve Harmison’s first ball finished at second slip. Somehow England never recovered.
In the absence of Jofra Archer and Olly Stone, England lack the essential speedsters which the Aussies possess.
In batting all hopes lie in Joe Root yet to score a century Down Under.
The West Indian tactic of targeting the captain will be used. By contrast the Aussies have Steve Smith, David Warner, Marcus Laplaschagne, proven Test scorers all.
As for the coverage, Ian Chappell is gruffly knowledgeable in the Boycott mould and sits well alongside the cheerful Jonathan Agnew who may be commentating on what could be his last tour.
Steve Finn who, now in Sussex, has joined the TMS team is fluent.
On the subject of fast bowlers, I hope Ollie Robinson tall with a steepling delivery may be effective.
The curator often produces a spinner’s track at Sydney but I can’t see Jack Leach being the man to exploit this.
