The Colonial

Great to have live golf back on our screen with the Charles Shwab tourney at Colinial Country Club.

The USPGA tourney was won after a play-off by Danny Berger over one of the young tyros who will surely make a big name Colin Morikawa who turned pro this year.

He and  Cameron Champ will be two youngsters to watch for.

In windy conditions a few bigger, more experienced names were found wanting with their putting and not for the first time favourite Rory McIlroy fell away in the final round, shooting +4.

I was on Joe Rahm, Justin Thomas, Kevin Kisner and Harris English but only Justin Thomas gave me  a run for my money.

I did have a tickle in the final round on Jason Kokrak at 66-1 but sadly not each way as he finished second.

Bryson deChambeau had put on 26lbs, Gary Woodland lost the same.

Most looked like they had spent a lot of lockdown time in the gym but there was rustiness too.

At the moment the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits, Lake Michigan is on for September.

It’s a course the Europeans will like -Martin Kaymer has won there in the past.

The European line up of McIlroy, Rose, Rahm , Stenson, Hatton, Molinari looks strong and after his PGA victory at Wentworth I can see Danny Willett included.

No selection would be complete without Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia should make it too.

Not that the Americans will be a pushover with the likes of Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Matt Kuchar and Webb Simpson – and you can expect a few rookies like Xander Schauffele to be added to the mix. Bring it on!
