The golfing weekend.
Both European and US PGA events were determined by play offs. Alvaro Quiros whose recent form was so bad he nearly lost his card squandered a 7 shot lead largely through nerves to Zander Lombard but beat the South African in a play off. Over at Texas, the Byron Nelson played out on the Four Seasons course, Billy Horschel also beat Jason Day in a play off. Day’s form has been effected by non golfing issues, namely his mother ‘s cancer, but he played a superb final round to get on terms with Billy Horschel. Day refound his mojo and A game but Horschel when he is in form is a tough opponent. I had the young Chinese prodigy Li each way who finished third in the Rocco Forte in Sicily and Bud Cauley too fifth in the Byron Nelson so I came out on Sunday with something to spare.
This week we have the flagship European event the PGA at Wentworth with no Rory Mcilroy who has not recovered from injury. Chris Woods the tall Bristolian is defending his title. This tourney usually produces a winner from the top bracket. Faldo, Langer, Montgomery, McIlroy have all been past winners.
After a couple of tournies of tinkering with formats with double pairings and 6 holes I am pleased for one to see a return to traditional 18 hole competition. Golf still needs to speed up to make it more telegenic but has not lost its corporate appeal. On the Wednesday prior to the first day of the PGA at Wentworth there ia Pro Am and this goes down really well with the sponsors. I will probably be at Homebase with the missus spending my ill gotten gains!
