The Masters
The pre-Masters story and money may have been on Tiger for his 15th major but it was one time Patrick Reed that will be wearing the green jacket tonight. He played solid golf over 4 rounds and displayed that gritty competitive edge we know so well from Ryder Cup duels to hold off the challenge of Spieth and Fowler. Spieth carded a final round of 64 and I thought he would win in his charge but fair play to Reed who thoroughly deserved the green jacket.
It now means all 4 majors are held by Americans aged under 27. This is the problem for Tiger and indeed Rory. A new generation has taken over.
With the Spieth challenge fading it was not Pargie’s greatest betting day. Reed was not an obvious winner.
There is a slew of Americans – Fowler and some oldies like Matt Kuchar and Charley Hoffman – who could have won too.
The British challenge was headed by Justin Rose.
Watch out for young Aussie Cameron Smith who finished a creditable 9th.
It’s a thrilling tourney to watch and as ever the Augusta course was stunning. For us UK viewers it finishes rather late. I felt the SKY coverage was inadequate when they did not have the feed. I don’t think viewers want to see technical stuff with the wooden Sarah Stoute.
I would have liked more discussion on say uncoached players like Bubba Watson v the formulaic moulded golfers emerging from college golf.
