The Masters/final day
Hot favourite Scottie Scheffler duly romped home 4 shots clear of Swedish rookie Ludwig Aaberg.
It’s Scheffler’s second green jacket in three years and follows victories in the Players Championship and at Houston. He is indisputably the best in the world at the moment and justified his skinny odds.
Aside from Tyrell Hatton, Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Smith, the LIV players did not really feature: defending champ Jon Rahm was well down the leaderboard (+7); Brooks Koepka did not make the cut; and Justin Thomas’ poor form continues.
Tommy Fleetwood finished third but the likeable Southport lad, who has never won Stateside, gets minimal publicity as Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods are still the big stories.
The Augusta course looked magnificent and was playing tough in high winds on Friday with her fast glassy, rapid, greens demanding the sort of accuracy round the green that Scheffler produced.
It’s a great tourney for its beauty and traditions and the watcher – whether fortunate enough to be there or following on the telly – knows the holes, marvels at the footbridge on Amen Corner and surely loves all the traditions from the green jacket to its wearer deciding the victor’s meal.
Betting-wise, I did well – backing Scheffler outright and lumping on Xavier Schauffele and Cameron Smith each way.
