The Open

I was last at St George’s in 1993 when Greg Norman roasted the field.

I followed him early and stayed with him to the 18th.

Since then Ben Curtis and Darren Clarke have won the claret jug here.

Like all links courses, it’s weather dependent: wind in your face – a wood, wind with you – a 6 iron.

It also has plenty of divots and each hole faces a different direction. It’s a true test of golf.

Having backed Italy at 15-2 for the Euros I had a nice few quid in my war chest. I swerved the hot favourite Jon Rahm as poor value and went for the juicier odds on Brooks Koepka, a serial Major winner and the in-form Jordan Spieth.

For my each-ways the Pargie tenner is on Victor Novland, Louis Oosthuizen, Garrick Higgo, Brandon Grace and  the Kiwi Ryan Fox for a top 20 finish.

The Rust only ran to putting me up in the two star New Inn Sandwich but it has a cheery snug with Sky TV on the screens.

The Kentish Town comes to life for the Open and the New Inn is turning way diners.

There is a voluble group of Ulstermen in the corner.

Are they supporting Rory or Shane?
